Over here you can take your turn to pan for gold, take a tour of the red hill mine where the largest nugget was discovered (not meant for the faint hearted & claustrophobic person). Roam around the town setting created in the 1800’s style where people are seen in costumes replicating the olden day towns of the western world. At night, Sovereign Hill stages the spectacular light & sound show called "Blood on the Southern Cross" – this is a re-enactment of the story of Australia's civil uprising the Eureka Rebellion in 1854. One more place to see is the Gold museum across the road, which houses exhibits of gold etc. Getting there is easy as it is just about an hours drive from Melbourne on the western side. How to get there: Trains & V/line buses run daily from Southern Cross station and take about 90 minutes to get there. A car drive from Melbourne can take just over an hour. Take the Westgate freeway (M1) from Melbourne and then turn into the Western Ring road (M80) and then on to the Western Freeway (M8) which will take you straight to Ballarat.
